The City seeks a highly innovative and professional manager to lead its daily communication efforts in a fast-paced work environment serving the needs of both the public and the organization. This position will serve as the chief organizational spokesperson, and develop and implement a complete public information program that uses a variety of established and emerging communication media. Oversight of the City’s well-established social media program is an essential component of this position.
The Communications Manager will oversee major communication projects to ensure that citizens are informed about activities, functions and major initiatives of their City government, in accordance with the annual Work Plan established by the City Council and other Council direction. The most qualified candidates will demonstrate a solid understanding of the public policy process and the sensitivity required to successfully negotiate and communicate regarding complex public policy issues. This position regularly interacts with City department directors and the City Manager and/or members of City Council.
This position will maintain a close working relationship with the Information Technology web content coordinator and with the Office of Neighborhoods and Community Engagement, and help establish a strong bridge between the Communications Division and the GIS/Data Analytics program, as data and technology can inform the policy process and help the City more effectively tell its story.
The successful candidate for Communications Manager will embrace this idea and build on it as the worlds of information technology and communications increasingly intersect, and as the City increases its efforts to reach diverse communities.
As the manager of Communications Division staff, the Communications Manager will oversee communications production and training. Production will include writing and editing, social media, print products including brochures and newsletters, web content, graphic communication, multimedia including photography, videography and post-production.
The successful candidate will find that the city operates as a lean and highly efficient organization. This requires its managers to perform hands-on project work even as they carry out oversight of projects and management of staff, and manage budgets with a high level of prudence.
