Salary Range: $63,419 - $88,754 Annually

The City is currently seeking qualified individuals to fill the position of Public Information Officer. This is an exempt, full-time, benefited position with a six (6) month probationary period. 

Classification Summary

The primary function of an employee in this class is to develop, implement and maintain an effective public information program on either a citywide or departmental basis; serve as the City’s spokesperson and primary media liaison; develops positive press releases to the media; delivers news and information through City communication tools; provides support to the City Council in development of newspaper columns, speeches, and videos; coordinates City Council open houses and public meetings. Work includes professional application of research and writing skills, selecting news media, preparing and releasing material, and preparing various periodic and special reports.

Essential Functions (list is not exhaustive)

  • Develops press releases, columns and other materials for the media for publication;
  • Delivers news and information through City communication tools;
  • Provides City Council with support/information on issues of interest to the media;
  • Develops communication plans for various City campaigns, both internally and externally;
  • Works with information specialists on the development of content for City web sites;
  • Shares information on City social media profiles and responds on behalf of the City;
  • Takes photographs for public information materials at City events;
  • Maintains City press clippings and communicates news/issues to the employees;
  • Coordinates official City functions for the City Council/City Manager;
  • Writes scripts for video projects and the City’s on-hold phone system;
  • Develops questions/scenarios for Council cable shows;
  • Works with other departments on media and protocol training/advice;
  • Responds to public records requests made by the news media;
  • Acts as City’s official spokesperson with the media to provide the City’s response to issues;
  • Co-chairs Employee Communications Group;
  • Serves on various City committees and other regional committees;
  • Performs all work duties and activities in accordance with City policies and procedures;
  • Works in a safe manner and reports unsafe activity and conditions. Follows City-wide safety policy and practices and adheres to responsibilities concerning safety prevention, reporting and monitoring as outlined in the City’s Safety Handbook.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Mass Communications or related field; and
  • Five (5) experience in progressively responsible public relations positions; and
  • Valid State Driver’s License with acceptable driving record; or
  • Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to perform the work.
