The Public Information Officer (PIO) will serve as a key member of the management team. The position, which reports to the City Manager, requires experience in current public information and media relations practices and the ability to work in a team environment. The PIO, in conjunction with the Community Outreach Division, serves an important coordination role in the City's efforts to develop and disseminate information about City programs, services, and other issues; serves as spokesperson for the City, and works to provide a comprehensive media relations program for the purpose of educating the public and maintaining a positive public image. The position will work with a variety of City functions to communicate the City's strategic plan and policies, provide management of the news portion of the City's website, and assist the oversight of the City's social medial presence and other communication related programs. The PIO will foster a relationship with media representatives at various levels in order to proactively present city programs, services and initiatives. The PIO will work independently and with all City Departments to foster awareness of City communication efforts. Essential Job Functions: 

  • Oversees the media relations function of the City. 
  • Serves as primary point of contact for all media on behalf of the City and all of its departments, including both Fire Rescue and Police Departments. 
  • Serves as communications advisor to City Manager, City Commission, and department heads, providing technical support in all forms of communication and in providing direction in the area of medial relations. 
  • Researches, develops and disseminates electronic and printed publications, press releases, photographic materials, feature articles, videos, public service announcements, promotional materials and other forms of communications to local medial and the public to increase community awareness of city activities, services and programs.  
  • Assists the Community Outreach Division in electronic communications, such as social media and content for the city website.  The Public Information Officer and the Community Outreach Division will work side-by-side in public relation efforts. 
  • Responsible to all media inquiries in a timely, accurate manner. 
  • Represents the City at civic events and organizations and acts as spokesperson when appropriate.
  • Provide information to citizens, agencies, other governments, etc.
  • Serve in an on-call capacity to respond to emergencies at any time in the event that information needs to be released to local media and the public.
  • Serves as backup support for City Manager's office. 
  • Leads the coordination of press conferences as deemed appropriate.  
  • Conducts tours for local media, freelance writers, editors, publishers and the like.
  • Attends staff meetings, council meetings and community meetings as directed by the City Manager to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the job.

Education, Experience, Licenses and Certifications: 

  • Four (4) year degree from an accredited college or university in journalism, communications, public relations, social sciences, education, public administration or related field.  
  • Four (4) years of professional experience as a public information officer or in journalism, public relations, research, grant writing and project management experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience.  Experience in crisis communications or public safety information will be considered.  
  • Must meet requirements in relation to the State (FCIC) and the National (NCIC) Criminal Information Centers.  
  • Possession of a valid State Driver's license or ability to obtain within six weeks of date of hire. 

(A comparable amount of training, education and/or experience may be considered as a substitute for the above qualifications.)
